The Nigerian political landscape has been thrown into a state of bewilderment as Dr. Kenneth Okonkwo, the former fiery spokesperson for the Obi-Datti Campaign, appears to have completed a total ideological pivot, leaving many of his erstwhile “Obidient” followers in a state of shock.

The veteran actor and legal practitioner, who once dominated national airwaves with blistering legal takedowns of the 2023 presidential election, is now making headlines for a very different reason. In a series of recent “Naija Unfiltered” sessions and media appearances in May 2026, Okonkwo has directed his most potent vitriol not at the presidency, but at his former principal, Peter Obi.

For much of 2023 and 2024, Okonkwo was the face of the opposition’s legal resistance, famously characterizing the election as a “civilian coup” and a violation of the Electoral Act. However, in a startling reversal that has trended across social media platforms, Okonkwo has recently dismissed the opposition’s current tactics as futile.

While he continues to criticize the APC’s economic performance, citing ₦1,400-per-litre fuel and rising insecurity, he has pivoted toward a “pragmatic” acceptance of the status quo that many supporters find jarring. His recent assertions that the 2023 legal chapters are “closed” and his focus on 2027 have led critics to accuse him of validating the very victory he once fought to overturn.

The fallout reached a fever pitch this month following Peter Obi’s exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party Okonkwo joined after dumping the Labour Party. Okonkwo did not hold back, accusing Obi of being “terrified of free and fair primaries” and labeling his former principal’s political movements as a benefit to the incumbent.

As it stands now, Peter Obi is working for Tinubu, directly or indirectly, Okonkwo declared in a recent interview. He further alleged that Obi “lied” about his reasons for leaving the ADC, claiming that anyone who refuses to join a united coalition is effectively handing the 2027 election to President Tinubu on a platter.

The public reaction has been one of profound whiplash. Disillusioned voters who once looked to Okonkwo as a principled defender of their mandate now view his shift as a classic case of Nigerian political gymnastics. Supporters on X (formerly Twitter) have pointed out the irony of a man who once spent hours explaining why the 2023 election was illegitimate now appearing to settle into the reality of it, while simultaneously attacking the man he once hailed as Nigeria’s savior.

Okonkwo, now a chieftain in the ADC, maintains that his stance is one of “principled realism,” arguing that the opposition’s internal crises and “clueless” leadership are the real threats to Nigeria’s democracy. However, for the millions who followed his lead during the post-election tribunals, the “new” Kenneth Okonkwo is a difficult pill to swallow.

As the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape, the saga of the actor-turned-politician serves as a stark reminder of the fluid and often contradictory nature of political loyalty in Nigeria.
