In a decisive move that has reshaped the internal power dynamics of Nigeria’s main opposition, the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has effectively seized the driver’s seat. By unveiling a concrete roadmap and strict timelines for party primaries during Monday’s 108th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the Wike-backed leadership has bypassed the rival Tanimu Turaki-led faction, signaling that they no longer intend to wait for legal resolutions to dictate the party’s pace.

The strategy, articulated by factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, centers on “electoral preparedness” and “structural consolidation.” While the Turaki camp—supported by powerful governors and recently bolstered by an Oyo State High Court ruling—continues to contest the party’s leadership in the Court of Appeal, the Wike bloc has moved to create facts on the ground. By ordering immediate preparations for primaries in accordance with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, they are positioning themselves as the sole functional administrative body of the party, effectively forcing the hand of both the electoral umpire and party aspirants.

Wike’s camp has framed this acceleration as a necessary step to end “leadership uncertainty” that has plagued the PDP since the disputed 2025 conventions. The rollout includes a massive e-registration drive designed to build a fresh, digitized database of loyalists, potentially rendering the rival faction’s 4.2 million-member claim obsolete. Minister Wike underscored this tactical shift by insisting that legitimacy is defined by those who occupy the National Secretariat and drive the party’s calendar, rather than those who hold meetings in hotels.

This move to establish a “new reality” places the Turaki faction in a difficult position. Despite their claims of being the “authentic arm” of the PDP, they now face a rival that is already setting the dates and rules for the 2027 contest. As the Wike camp moves forward with its timeline, the battle for the PDP has transitioned from a purely legal dispute into a race for administrative control, where the faction that successfully conducts the primaries will likely be the one that survives into the next election cycle.
