THE political atmosphere in the country has been further heated as the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Mr. Daniel Bwala, finds himself at the center of a raging storm over his past vitriolic attacks on President Bola Tinubu.

The controversy, which has refused to go away, gained fresh momentum following Bwala’s recent appearance on Al Jazeera’s Head to Head, where host Mehdi Hasan confronted him with archival clips of his own words from the 2023 election cycle. In those recordings, Bwala—then a spokesperson for the opposition—had raised alarm over the President’s health, questioned his cognitive presence, and alleged that the administration would be a “dynasty” modeled after Alpha-Beta’s influence in Lagos.

The resurgence of these critiques has triggered a wave of backlash from across the political divide, with many Nigerians questioning the moral authority of a presidential aide who once warned that voting for his current boss would be “wasting one’s life.”

In a spirited defense during a follow-up interview on News Central TV, Bwala dismissed the Al Jazeera encounter as “opposition-style journalism.” While he admitted to making the statements during his time in the opposition, he claimed his perspective has since shifted toward national interest. However, his attempt to bridge this “credibility gap” was met with skepticism, especially after he revealed undergoing throat surgery just eight days after the grueling Al Jazeera interview—a timing that social media critics have mockingly linked to the “heat” of the encounter.

The fallout has reached Ibadan, where political analysts and stakeholders expressed concern over the “mercenary” nature of modern political appointments. Critics argue that the “Ghost of 2023” will continue to haunt the administration’s communication strategy as Bwala attempts to sell the “Renewed Hope” agenda using the same platform he once used to dismantle it.

As the 2027 political permutations begin to take shape, the Presidency faces increasing pressure to reconcile Bwala’s past assertions with his current role. For many, the viral video remains a stinging reminder of the fluidity of political loyalty in Nigeria, leaving the Special Adviser to battle not just the opposition, but the haunting echoes of his own voice.
