There was palpable tension in KuGompo city on Wednesday as hundreds of protesters marched through the streets, demanding the immediate shutdown of a nightclub reportedly linked to Nigerians. The demonstrators, who targeted the establishment known as California Tavern, alleged that the nightclub has become a hub for drug-related activities, posing a threat to the community. Nondumiso Tyiso, one of the organizers of the march, claimed that illicit drugs were being sold openly at the venue, sparking the outrage that led to the mass protest. This latest move follows a wave of anti-immigrant demonstrations led by the controversial group, Operation Dudula, last week. Those protests were reportedly ignited by the “crowning” of a Nigerian “king” in Buffalo City, an event that triggered xenophobic sentiments and led to the looting of several Somali-owned shops and the burning of vehicles. Fearing a repeat of last week’s violence, many immigrant-owned businesses in the KuGompo city centre hurriedly shut down on Wednesday. Police maintained a heavy presence to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control. A major confrontation was narrowly avoided when police blocked protesters from entering the Belgrave Hotel, which houses the nightclub, as they attempted to submit a memorandum to the building owner. Hazel Mqala, spokesperson for the KuGompo city police, confirmed that officers were on the ground to protect lives and property. She revealed that the police had previously confiscated drugs during routine patrols in the area. In a statement later on Wednesday, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana of the South African Police Service (SAPS) disclosed that security forces were forced to use stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse “opportunistic criminal elements” who attempted to hijack the protest. Gantana confirmed that one suspect had been arrested for assaulting a police officer and is expected to appear in court shortly. She added that authorities have already opened 11 criminal cases following the unrest that began last week. As the pressure mounted, the owners of the Belgrave Hotel announced late Wednesday that they had officially decided to close down California Tavern to restore peace to the area. This development comes at a time of heightened sensitivity for Nigerians living in South Africa, as local authorities struggle to balance community demands with the protection of foreign nationals.
