LAGOS – Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has raised an alarm over the 2027 general elections, warning that judicial interference in party politics could lead to a “one-candidate” presidential race. Speaking at the fifth Comrade Yinka Odumakin Memorial Lecture in Ikeja, the senior advocate criticized the frequent use of court orders to destabilize political parties. He argued that the legal system is being manipulated to create a lopsided political landscape, potentially leaving voters with no real choice in the next general election. Falana specifically pointed to recent conflicting judgments and INEC’s decision to de-recognize certain party factions as evidence of a shrinking democratic space. He remarked that if the judiciary continues to dictate internal party affairs, the nation might eventually find itself with a single candidate, making the massive financial cost of conducting a presidential election entirely unnecessary. The lecture, attended by labour leaders and pro-democracy activists, highlighted a growing concern that judicial “activism” is overriding the provisions of the Electoral Act and threatening the foundation of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
