IBADAN – The political atmosphere in Oyo State has taken a dramatic and fearful turn as the long-standing internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reaches a fever pitch.

In the wake of reports that the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has effectively seized the party’s national administrative machinery, a “grave silence” has reportedly enveloped the camp of Governor Seyi Makinde.

The tension was further heightened following the bombshell news of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s reported exit from the PDP. Sources indicate that the Bauchi Governor is set to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) today, a move that many see as the first major domino to fall in a crumbling national opposition structure.

For the Makinde camp, which has maintained a delicate balancing act within the party, the loss of a key ally like Mohammed to the ADC is seen as a sign that the Wike-led national faction is now in an undisputed position of strength, leaving non-aligned governors isolated.

The panic is most visible among political aspirants, vying for different position. With the national secretariat—responsible for validating party primaries—now firmly under the control of the Wike faction, many fear their political futures are in jeopardy.

Speaking on the condition of anoymity, a prominent House of Assembly aspirant confessed to Gistlife that the hunt for a safer political platform has intensified.

”There is serious unease. The Wike faction has taken over the party at the federal level despite the legal battles. We are not sure where we stand. Our governor is currently holding marathon, closed-door meetings with stakeholders to weigh our options. We may follow the exit path, but we are waiting for ‘Oga’ to show us the new direction,” the source revealed.

Investigations reveal that Governor Makinde has been in intense consultations . The Governor, who has recently voiced concerns about the party’s direction, is said to be exploring “possible alignments” to ensure that the political structure in Oyo remains insulated from the national upheaval.

The fear within the camp is that if they remain in a PDP controlled by the Wike faction, they may face sabotage during the 2027 primary processes.

.However, the mood among the Governor’s inner circle is described as “somber and watchful.”

With the rumored defection of Governor Bala Mohammed acting as a catalyst, political observers believe it is only a matter of time before the “Makinde Machine” makes a definitive move to either reclaim its space in the PDP or find a new home entirely.
