The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, signaled his imminent exit from the main opposition party.

The Governor, who has been a vocal figure within the PDP, hinted that he is set to pitch his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with a formal declaration expected as early as Thursday.

Speaking with newsmen in Bauchi after a closed-door session with an ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, Mohammed painted a picture of a man left with few options.

The Governor revealed that despite extensive efforts to bridge the widening cracks within the PDP, reconciliation had reached a dead end. In a surprising twist, he admitted to even eyeing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), only to be met with a cold shoulder.

“We set up committees at both the national and state levels to explore all options, including even the All Progressives Congress, but sadly, we discovered that we are not wanted there,” Mohammed confessed.

True to the current temperature of Nigerian politics, Mohammed did not mince words in identifying the “forces” behind the PDP’s instability. He pointed fingers at the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of orchestrating the deepening divisions that have made the party “untenable” for him.

The Governor noted that even high-level engagements with President Bola Tinubu and other APC stalwarts failed to yield a political middle ground, leaving the ADC as his most viable “welcoming” platform.

The ADC delegation, acting under the guidance of former Senate President David Mark, described the move as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Babachir Lawal stated that the party is positioning itself as the “credible alternative” to the current political order. “We are here to engage Governor Bala Mohammed because of his leadership qualities. The task of rescuing Nigeria requires the unity of all well-meaning Nigerians,” Lawal told reporters.

As the political clock ticks, the Governor has set a strict timeline for his next move.

“Everything will be concluded by Thursday so that we can move forward together. You will hear a firm commitment from us,” Mohammed stated, effectively putting the PDP on notice.

With the potential loss of a sitting Northern Governor, the PDP faces a grueling 48 hours as it struggles to keep its house from collapsing entirely before the next election cycle.
