The political landscape of Nasarawa State faced a major tremor on Tuesday as the former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, officially resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, which surfaced publicly today, the veteran politician, popularly known as ‘Mutumin Kirki’, confirmed that his departure from the main opposition party takes immediate effect.

Addressing the letter to the PDP chairman of his Wakama Ward in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Maku attributed his exit to the prolonged and unresolved internal crisis currently rocking the party. He further explained that the decision was not a solitary one but a response to mounting pressure from his core political base and loyal supporters who are demanding a fresh political direction for their movement.

The former Deputy Governor, who served Nasarawa State between 1999 and 2007, described the move as a “difficult but necessary” step for his political future. He revealed that the resignation followed extensive consultations with family members, traditional rulers, and key political allies across the state. While Maku expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platforms and opportunities provided to him over the years, he maintained that his commitment to public service remains his top priority as he prepares to chart a new course outside the umbrella.
