Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, faces imminent expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the internal crisis within the main opposition party reaches a breaking point. Speaking on Sunday at the 2026 National Convention of the PDP—an event backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—Fayose described the gathering as a definitive turning point. He accused Makinde of undermining the party’s unity through contradictory actions, alleging that the Governor was attempting to negotiate with the party leadership while simultaneously pursuing legal action at the Supreme Court. Fayose did not hold back in his assessment of the Oyo State Governor, labeling him among those he described as “children of perdition” who refuse to listen to party authority. He claimed that Makinde is already under suspension and asserted that his formal expulsion would follow the conclusion of the convention. Furthermore, the former Ekiti governor predicted that Makinde’s current political trajectory would lead to the loss of his stronghold in Oyo State in future elections. The deepening divide within the PDP has effectively split the party into two rival factions. One group, led by Kabiru Turaki and loyal to Governor Makinde, had approached the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the Wike-backed faction from conducting the convention. However, the event proceeded after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally recognized the faction of the National Working Committee aligned with Mr. Wike. Throughout his address, Fayose reaffirmed his absolute support for Nyesom Wike, identifying him as the national leader of the party and praising his role in repositioning the organization. He maintained that while the PDP remains open to sincere members, it will no longer tolerate individuals acting against its collective interests. The convention concluded on Sunday with the election of a new set of national officers, despite the ongoing legal battles and the significant absence of the faction loyal to the Oyo State Governor. As of Sunday evening, Governor Makinde has yet to issue an official response to the threats of expulsion or the allegations leveled against him by Fayose.
