The Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has stirred the political pot by declaring his total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek a second term in office. Soludo, who was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made the shocking revelation during a high-profile engagement, where he praised the President’s handling of the nation’s affairs since assuming office in May 2023. According to the former Central Bank Governor, the President has shown “uncommon courage” in tackling the deep-seated economic challenges facing the country, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market. The Governor maintained that despite the immediate hardships caused by these policies, they are the necessary “bitter pills” required for Nigeria’s long-term survival. “I believe President Tinubu has done well and he deserves a second term, I have no apologies about that,” Soludo stated categorically. The Governor’s endorsement is coming at a time when several opposition figures are criticizing the Federal Government over the rising cost of living. However, Soludo argued that leadership is about making tough decisions for the future, rather than seeking cheap popularity. He further noted that for the sake of continuity and the completion of major infrastructure projects across the federation, the President should be given the opportunity to consolidate on his “Renewed Hope” agenda. “Politics is about the progress of the people. When you see a leader who is ready to take the bull by the horns, you support him regardless of party lines. We need stability to move this country forward,” he added. This declaration has sparked intense debate within the political space, with many wondering if this signals a brewing alliance between the APGA-led Anambra government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next general election. Soludo’s stance marks a significant departure from the typical opposition rhetoric, positioning him as a pragmatic leader focused on national interest over partisan friction.
