The race to succeed Governor Seyi Makinde in 2027 has taken a dramatic turn as one of his closest confidants, Dr. Debo Akande, signaled his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election.

Akande, a key pillar in the current administration’s “Omituntun” agenda, broke his silence during a live broadcast on Splash FM in Ibadan, declaring that he possesses the requisite qualifications to lead the Pacesetter State.

When pressed during the interview on whether he has eyes on the Agodi Government House, Akande did not mince words.

”I have what it takes to become the Governor of Oyo State,” he stated, marking the first time a high-ranking member of Makinde’s inner circle has publicly expressed such ambition.

While stopping short of a “formal” declaration, Akande’s tactical response has sent ripples through the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. He added that the ultimate decision rests with the electorate: “It is meant for the Oyo State people to determine whether I am qualified for that position.”

The declaration aligns with Governor Makinde’s previous public stance regarding his successor. The Governor had hinted that the next leader of Oyo State should ideally fall within the 50-year age bracket, a criterion that many believe was designed to pave the way for a younger generation of technocrats

As the countdown to May 29, 2027, narrows, the political space is becoming increasingly crowded. Apart from Akande, other heavyweights currently linked to the race include:

  • Dr. Nureni Adeniran: Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
  • Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi: Former Commissioner for Finance.
  • Hon. Stanley Olajide (Odidiomo): Member of the House of Representatives.

With approximately 435 days left until the transition, Akande’s entry into the conversation is expected to heighten internal permutations within the PDP as various factions begin to align ahead of the party primaries.
