Tragedy hit the commercial nerve center of Anambra State last night as a massive fire tore through the Plumbing Material Section of the famous Head Bridge Market.

While the rest of the city was tucked in bed, the sky near the River Niger Bridge turned a terrifying shade of orange. For many traders, decades of “sweat and blood” literally went up in smoke in just a few hours.

The nightmare began just five minutes before midnight on Friday. Security guards on patrol spotted smoke and immediately raised the alarm, but the fire was moving faster than anyone expected.

Traders who rushed from their homes were met with a wall of heat. Many stood on the Onitsha-Awka Expressway, weeping openly as they watched their livelihoods—plumbing kits, pipes, and expensive building materials—turn into black ash.

The hero of the night? The Chairman of the Plumbing Market. As soon as he got the distress call at 12:15 AM, he didn’t wait for morning. He jumped into his car and raced all the way from Asaba to the scene to coordinate the rescue.

The Onitsha South LGA Chairman also didn’t “sleep on the matter.” He mobilized the Anambra State Fire Service, who arrived in their numbers to battle the dragon and stop it from jumping into the nearby Ogbo-Ogwu Medicine Market.
