High-profile lawyer and former Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has signaled a major shift in the country’s political landscape, confirming that the doors are wide open for a “Mega Coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Okonkwo addressed rumors that the opposition is planning a massive “anyone-but-Tinubu” alliance. He specifically addressed the possibility of teaming up with heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the former Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.

When asked if his recent comments meant he was ready to work with individuals from vastly different political backgrounds, Okonkwo was emphatic.

“I never said we would not entertain the likes of Atiku or Aregbesola in any coalition,” he stated. “The nature of a coalition is that you bring together different interests to achieve a common goal.”

He further explained that the current state of the nation requires a broad-based alliance to provide a “viable alternative” to the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. According to him, the move is less about targeting an individual and more about “rescuing” the country.

Okonkwo was quick to reframe the narrative from a personal attack to a systemic challenge. While the host pushed on whether the goal was specifically an “anti-Tinubu” alliance, Okonkwo countered, calling it a “pro-Nigeria alliance.”

“It is not just about defeating an individual, but about defeating a system and a policy direction that we believe is not working for the majority of Nigerians,” Okonkwo added.

The mention of Rauf Aregbesola—a founding member of the APC—has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. It suggests that the burgeoning coalition is not just looking at traditional opposition parties like the PDP, LP, or ADC, but is actively reaching into the ruling party to pull out disaffected members.
