ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has issued a final ultimatum to all political appointees with ambitions for the 2027 general elections, directing them to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026. The directive, which was contained in a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), is in strict compliance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the recently released INEC timetable. According to the circular signed by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, all affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the SGF’s office within the two-week window. The President emphasized that the move is essential to uphold the integrity of the political process. By vacating their seats before the party primaries, appointees are expected to ensure a “level playing field” for all aspirants and prevent the use of public office to gain an unfair advantage. President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He noted that full compliance with the law would foster transparency and ensure that governance remains focused on service delivery rather than the distractions of early electioneering. Political observers believe this move will trigger a major cabinet reshuffle as several ministers and agency heads are reportedly eyeing governorship and legislative seats across the country.
