The Federal Government has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Fitr.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on Tuesday, congratulating the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister urged Nigerians to internalize the spiritual lessons of the fasting period. He emphasized that the virtues of self-discipline, generosity, and compassion should extend beyond the month of Ramadan.

“Muslims are encouraged to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice, which were emphasized during the holy month,” the statement read.

With the nation currently navigating various security and economic hurdles, the Minister called on citizens to use the two-day break to offer special prayers for the peace, unity, and prosperity of Nigeria.

He further noted that the Federal Government remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting all citizens and fostering a harmonious environment for every ethnic and religious group.

The declaration ensures a long weekend for workers across the federation, as festivities are expected to peak on Thursday following the anticipated sighting of the Shawwal moon.
