The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially commenced a high-level forensic investigation into the tragic shooting that claimed the life of a resident in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo, Osun State, on Sunday. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage and “growing public interest,” reportedly occurred during an operation involving the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). In a statement made available to Daily Post on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Okon Placid, revealed that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a “diligent and professional” inquiry to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death. The police confirmed that they are not leaving anything to chance. Forensic experts are currently analyzing a Beretta pistol with Breech Number 125024 along with 9mm ballistic evidence recovered from the scene. The analysis aims to determine if the shooters complied with the standard Rules of Engagement (RoE) or if the operation was a case of professional negligence. Two suspects, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, are currently cooling their heels in police custody. According to the NPF, the duo is assisting investigators at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osun. Addressing the tension between the two sister agencies, Placid clarified that the NPF acknowledges the statutory duties of the Nigeria Customs Service in curbing smuggling. However, he maintained that the “sanctity of human life” remains the highest priority of the state. “The NPF and NCS maintain a robust, professional relationship. This incident is being treated as a matter of individual professional accountability,” the statement read. The police further urged residents and the general public to remain calm and avoid “sensationalizing” the event as a clash between agencies, insisting that both the NPF and NCS are united in seeking justice for the deceased. The Force extended its condolences to the bereaved family, promising that the conclusion of the probe would uphold the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
