The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent comments regarding the “sweetness of winning,” accusing the President of being disconnected from the harrowing realities facing the Nigerian masses.

The backlash follows a viral video of the President speaking during an interfaith breaking of fast on Wednesday night. In the clip, Tinubu remarked that “the game is sweet only when you are winning,” a statement that has sparked a wave of criticism across the political landscape.

Reacting to the comment via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned the President’s choice of metaphors at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented hardship.

Abdullahi challenged the President to identify who the “winners” are in a nation plagued by economic instability and bloodshed.

“It is important to ask the President: Who exactly is winning in this so-called game?” Abdullahi queried.

The ADC spokesman painted a grim picture of the current state of the federation, listing several areas where he believes Nigerians are losing the “game.”

The party maintained that the office of the President carries too much weight to be reduced to the level of a pastime or a sport. According to the ADC, the current political climate is not a game, as the Nigerian people are the ones “paying the price” for the government’s perceived lack of gravity.

“Nigeria does not need a gamer-in-chief,” Abdullahi stated firmly. “Nigeria needs a leader who understands the weight of the office he holds and the responsibility it carries.”

The Presidency is yet to issue a formal response to the ADC’s critique.
