What was meant to be a tribute to a fallen legend has turned into a digital battlefield. Nollywood actor Rotimi Salami is not holding back after a social media critic accused him of “exploiting” the memory of the late actress and director, Allwell Ademola, to sell movie tickets.

The drama unfolded following the promotional rollout for Salami’s new cinema project, Kilanko. The film holds deep emotional weight for the industry, as it was directed by Ademola before her tragic passing in December 2023.

Since the announcement of Kilanko, Salami has frequently shared photos and behind-the-scenes clips of Ademola to honor her final professional contribution. However, one follower took offense, sparking a heated exchange by commenting:

“I don’t know why you are using this lady to sell film. Please, let her rest peacefully.”

Salami, clearly stung by the accusation of opportunism, wasted no time in delivering a stinging clapback. He dismissed the critic’s comment as “pure ignorance,” suggesting that hiding the hard work of a deceased loved one is the real disservice.

“If it gets to your turn, keep [it] inside the cupboard or hide the hard work of your late loved ones,” the actor fired back.

Expanding on the controversy during an interview with Oyinmomo TV, Salami opened up about the late filmmaker’s health and the legacy she left behind. Addressing rumors surrounding her death, he clarified that Ademola was incredibly health-conscious.

Allwell Ademola’s death on December 27 sent shockwaves through the industry, with heavyweights like Mr. Latin, Faithia Williams, and Odunlade Adekola mourning her. Following a candlelight procession in January, she was laid to rest, but her presence continues to loom large over the box office.

For Rotimi Salami, Kilanko is more than a movie; it’s a final salute to a director who died doing what she loved. Whether the critics like it or not, Salami seems determined to keep her name—and her last work.
