The political atmosphere in Nigeria has hit boiling point as the legal battle over the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, takes a dramatic turn.

His lead counsel, Barr. Ubong Esop Akpan, has launched a scathing attack on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), accusing the agency of abandoning law enforcement for “state-sponsored extortion” and a desperate political vendetta.

At the heart of the storm are explosive leaks alleging that El-Rufai is linked to multi-billion naira properties in Egypt. However, Akpan has dismissed these claims as pure fiction, labeled them “shadowy leaks” designed to justify what he calls an unlawful abduction by the state.

“This is not an investigation,” Akpan declared. “It is a desperate smear campaign designed to justify the ongoing unlawful detention of a citizen who has committed no crime.”

The timeline of El-Rufai’s detention reads like a political thriller

As of today, March 9, El-Rufai has spent over 20 days behind bars, a move his lawyers say flatly contradicts Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution.

The defense team isn’t just playing defense; they are going on the offensive. They have initiated criminal complaint proceedings against the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, and the DSS Director General, seeking personal accountability for what they term “crimes against the rule of law.”

The demand is simple: Produce the evidence in a competent court or open the cell doors immediately.
