A horrific cooking gas explosion has turned a busy afternoon at Onuebonyi Junction into a scene of mourning and devastation. The inferno, which tore through a row of shops on Thursday, claimed the life of a four-year-old boy and left four others fighting for their lives in a local hospital.

The fire reportedly began in a shop owned by a woman popularly known as Mama Osi. Witnesses say a gas cylinder exploded, instantly igniting the shopโ€™s contents. In a heart-wrenching display of bravery, Mama Osi dashed into the flames to rescue her four children trapped inside.

While she managed to pull three out, she sustained severe burns, and her youngest son, Osinachi, was tragically burnt beyond recognition before help could reach him. Her husband was reportedly away in their home village of Okposi when the disaster struck.

The fire spread with terrifying speed, jumping from one stall to the next. By the time neighbors and first responders contained the blaze, five shops had been reduced to ash.

The Executive Secretary of the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (EBSEMA), Mr. Clement Ovuoba, confirmed that a response team has been deployed to assess the wreckage.

“This is a profound misfortune. We are documenting the losses to ensure the state government can provide the necessary intervention to cushion the effect on these families,” Ovuoba stated.

Emergency responders are using this tragedy to remind residents of the extreme dangers of cooking inside shops or poorly ventilated commercial spaces, especially around flammable materials like palm oil.
