The world football governing body, FIFA, has officially crushed Nigeria’s lingering hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a statement released on Wednesday, FIFA confirmed the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, naming the Leopards of DR Congo as Africa’s sole representative.

The decision effectively puts an end to the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) legal battle to overturn the Super Eagles’ defeat in the CAF play-offs held in November 2025.

Nigeria had lodged a formal protest following a heartbreaking 1-1 draw and subsequent penalty shootout loss to DR Congo. The NFF alleged that the Congolese side fielded ineligible players during the decisive encounter.

However, the latest accreditation notice circulated to journalists by FIFA indicates that the protest failed to sway the disciplinary committee.

According to FIFA, the play-off tournament will feature six teams battling for the final two slots for the World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The confirmed participants are:

  • DR Congo (Africa)
  • Bolivia (South America)
  • Iraq (Asia)
  • Jamaica (CONCACAF)
  • Suriname (CONCACAF)
  • New Caledonia (Oceania)

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places… All of the six teams have now been decided,” FIFA stated.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off on March 26, 2026. With this confirmation, the Super Eagles will officially miss out on back-to-back World Cup tournaments, following their absence from the 2022 edition in Qatar.

The development is expected to spark fresh reactions from football stakeholders in Nigeria, with many calling for a total overhaul of the national team’s technical department.
