LAGOS — The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has delivered a landmark ruling in the quest for medical accountability, suspending three high-profile doctors over the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the son of celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The decision, which has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian medical community, follows a rigorous probe into allegations of gross negligence during a procedure at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.

The panel’s hammer fell hardest on Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, the Medical Director of Euracare, along with the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, the Chief Medical Officer of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.

The trio has been officially barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria. Their suspension remains in effect until their cases are fully determined by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

The tragic chain of events began in January 2026 when Nkanu was admitted for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line following a severe infection. According to a harrowing statement previously released by Adichie, her son was sedated with propofol but was allegedly left without adequate monitoring.

“He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital,” Adichie had lamented, sparked a national conversation on the safety of private healthcare facilities in Nigeria.

While three doctors face immediate suspension, the investigation has implicated a total of 13 practitioners. The panel established a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors, including Dr. Adeseye Akinsete and Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu. These individuals will now face the Disciplinary Tribunal to defend their professional conduct.

Conversely, eight other doctors who were part of the initial probe have been cleared of any wrongdoing following a review of their depositions and counter-affidavits.

This move by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) is being viewed as a significant step in addressing medical malpractice. For many, it represents a rare instance where the high-profile nature of a patient has forced a swift and transparent investigation into the standards of care in top-tier private hospitals.
