The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general elections, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has described the presidency of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “painful lesson” rather than a blessing for the country. Adebayo made these remarks on Saturday during a Ramadan Iftar organized by the AAFAQ Foundation in Kano. According to the SDP chieftain, the current political and economic climate under the Tinubu administration is a divine wake-up call for Nigerians to reassess their choices and embrace justice over tribal or religious sentiments. “Four years ago, I was in the city of Kano campaigning for the president of Nigeria. And I could see that God wanted to teach us a lesson in Nigeria. And until we learn that lesson, there is nothing the world can do. Almighty Allah does not make mistakes,” Adebayo stated. Adebayo specifically took a swipe at the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket that brought the current administration to power, mocking those who celebrated the arrangement during the 2023 campaign. He noted that the realities of governance have now exposed the futility of such a sentiment-driven choice. “When I came to Kano, people were smiling when they were mentioning Muslim–Muslim tickets. I said, don’t worry. Let the election finish. Time will come that if they were looking for two Muslims, they would not even get one,” he added. The legal practitioner turned politician emphasized that the survival of any nation depends more on justice than on its natural resources. He argued that it is better to live in a “desert with justice” than a land of plenty characterized by injustice. Earlier in the day, the SDP leader visited the residence of the former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, to commiserate with him over the death of his elder brother, Dahiru Shekarau. Shekarau, in his response, lauded Adebayo’s visit, describing it as a reflection of “genuine brotherhood” that transcends political affiliations.
