LAGOS — Nollywood’s undisputed box office titan, Funke Akindele, has finally spoken out following the historic success of her latest cinematic masterpiece, Behind The Scenes. Fresh off the heels of the film becoming the highest-grossing Nollywood movie of all time with a staggering N2.7 billion in earnings, the filmmaker insists her drive isn’t fueled by a desire to outdo her colleagues, but by a deep-seated passion for the African narrative. Speaking at a prestigious awards event hosted by the National Film and Video Censors Board, Akindele addressed the “box office wars” narrative that often surrounds her record-breaking career. “I’m not competing. It’s not a competition. I just want to tell African stories, you know, our own Nigerian stories. I want us to feel accepted, loved,” she stated emphatically. For Akindele, the goal is global representation—ensuring that the world hears the African story directly from an African voice, without filters or Western leanings. When grilled about potential sequels or her next big move for 2026, Akindele remained tight-lipped but teased that something “big” is cooking. “I don’t want to spill it yet… but you will love it. I don’t pressure myself. I just keep taking it one day at a time, doing my thing.” With a fresh ambassadorial deal with Monieworld recently bagged and a public reconciliation with industry peers like Iyabo Ojo and Fathia Balogun making headlines, Funke Akindele is entering the second quarter of 2026 at the absolute peak of her powers.
