LAGOS – The Lagos State Police Command has launched an intensive investigation into the alleged brutalization and robbery of popular Nollywood actor and skit maker, Ganiyu Morufu, widely known as Ijoba Lande. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across social media, reportedly occurred just six days after the entertainer returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom. The alarm was first raised when a distressing video surfaced online showing the actor in the front passenger seat of a vehicle, visibly injured. In the footage, Lande is seen with blood on the left side of his face and noticeable bruises. Clearly traumatized, the actor is heard speaking in Yoruba, repeatedly asking for water as bystanders attempted to provide first aid and urged him to report the matter to the authorities. Accompanying the video was a harrowing caption from the actor: “I returned from the UK six days ago and was attacked and beaten by police officers in Nigeria. They took my iPhone 16 Pro Max and my brother’s $1,200. I nearly lost my life.” Voices in the background of the viral clip specifically identified personnel from the Area “J” Police Division as the perpetrators, describing the assault as a “wrongful act.” Following the public outcry, the Lagos State Police Command moved to de-escalate the situation. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed on Saturday that the officers involved have been identified and are currently being questioned. “The officers involved have been identified and brought before the command for investigation,” Adebisi stated. “At present, the officers, the complainant [Ijoba Lande], and his friend are all giving their statements. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.” The incident has reignited conversations surrounding police conduct in Nigeria, particularly concerning “returnees” from the diaspora. Fans and human rights activists have called for a transparent probe, emphasizing that the recovery of the stolen property—specifically the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the $1,200 (approx. ₦1.8 million)—is as vital as the disciplinary action against the officers. As of Sunday morning, the actor appeared calmer in follow-up reports, though the physical and emotional toll of the encounter remains evident. The police have promised that appropriate legal and administrative actions will be taken based on the final outcome of the inquiry.
