The political atmosphere in Abuja just got a lot more tense. The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has fired a warning shot at the National Assembly: Stop dragging your feet on electoral reforms.

As the country inches closer to the next election cycle, the Wike-backed National Caretaker Committee is sounding the alarm, claiming that the current slow pace of legislative action is a recipe for disaster.

Speaking on behalf of the faction, Mohammed Jungudo, the National Publicity Secretary, made it clear that Nigerians haven’t forgotten the “flaws” of 2023. According to him, public confidence is currently sitting on a knife-edge.

“The Senate and the National Assembly must recognise the importance of this amendment to the Electoral Act,” Jungudo stated. “They must not allow the country to enter another election cycle without addressing the flaws exposed by the 2023 elections.”

The faction argues that postponing these amendments isn’t just a legislative delay—it’s a direct threat to voter trust. By refusing to expedite the Electoral Act amendments, the Senate risks deepening the institutional weaknesses that led to the controversies of the last general elections.

This isn’t just about policy; it’s about power. With the PDP currently split into factions, the Wike-aligned group is positioning itself as a watchdog for electoral integrity. By putting the “Red Chamber” on blast, they are effectively shifting the burden of a successful 2027 election onto the shoulders of the National Assembly.

As civil society groups and other political actors join the chorus, the question remains: Will the Senate listen, or are we headed for another “flawed” showdown?
