In a twist straight out of a Bollywood script, a 50-year-old beggar in Indore has been exposed as a high-net-worth individual, boasting a portfolio of multiple houses, vehicles, and a thriving money-lending business—all funded by the “charity” of strangers.

The man, identified only as Mangilal, was a fixture at the bustling Sarafa Bazaar. To the public, he was a tragic figure: a physically challenged man suffering from leprosy, pushing himself along on a wheeled wooden plank. But as Indore authorities ramped up their “Beggar-Free City” campaign, they discovered that Mangilal’s wooden board wasn’t just a mobility aid—it was a cash cow.

From Rags to Real Estate

After being rescued and questioned by civil servants, the “pitiful” facade crumbled. Investigation into Mangilal’s lifestyle revealed a shocking level of wealth:

  • Property Portfolio: Mangilal owns three separate properties, including a massive three-story house and a flat acquired through a government welfare program.
  • Transport Fleet: He owns two auto-rickshaws, which he rents out for steady income, and a private car complete with a salaried driver paid 12,000 Rupees ($130) a month.
  • The “Banker” of the Bazaar: Far from being a victim of the economy, Mangilal was found to be lending money at interest to the very shopkeepers he sat in front of.

“I Don’t Beg, They Just Give”

Despite the evidence, Mangilal remains nonchalant about his “career.” When confronted, he argued a technicality that would make a lawyer proud.

“I certainly go there, but I don’t beg,” he claimed. “It’s the people who put the money in my pocket or throw coins on the wooden board.”

Authorities revealed that the daily proceeds from his “non-begging” activities amounted to thousands of rupees, which he treated as investment capital rather than survival funds. The investigation has since widened, with officials probing his bank accounts and looking into his family members, who are reportedly also involved in the lucrative trade.

While Mangilal’s fingers were lost to disease, his grip on his finances has never been tighter.
