The mask is back, and so is the hunger.

Fresh off the emotional rollercoaster of the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco, Victor Osimhen wasted no time throwing himself back into the European trenches. The 27-year-old Super Eagles talisman, who just secured a bronze medal and a spot in the AFCON Best XI, returned to Istanbul not to rest, but to rescue Galatasaray’s Champions League dreams.

Despite an ankle injury that forced him to sit out Nigeria’s third-place play-off against Egypt, Osimhen defied fitness concerns to lead the line for Galatasaray on Wednesday night. He lasted the full 90 minutes in a gritty, high-octane 1-1 draw against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at the deafening RAMS Park.

The night started with a shock to the system for the Turkish giants. Giuliano Simeone silenced the home crowd inside four minutes, putting the Spanish side ahead. But Galatasaray, fueled by the return of their African King, rallied. A relentless period of pressure forced an own goal from Marcos Llorente in the 20th minute, restoring parity.

From there, it was a tactical chess match. While no further goals were scored, the intensity never dipped. For Osimhen, it was an emotional homecoming after a month away on national duty.

“Of course, I miss everyone so much, even the fans,” Osimhen admitted to the club’s official website post-match. “I congratulate my teammates. In a 90-minute battle against a tough team like this, we did a good job. The game was like 50-50. In some places, we had a chance to finish the game, but I’m happy with our performance.”

The draw against Atletico, however, leaves Galatasaray walking a tightrope. The mathematics are unforgiving: to guarantee a spot in the play-offs and keep their Champions League campaign alive, Cimbom must do the unthinkable—defeat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

It is a David vs. Goliath scenario. Pep Guardiola’s City is a machine built for European dominance, and the Etihad is a fortress where dreams often go to die. But Osimhen is not wired to fear giants.

Looking ahead to the group phase finale in seven days, Osimhen was defiant. While acknowledging the might of the English champions, he refused to write off his side’s chances.

“Manchester City is one of the best teams in the world,” Osimhen acknowledged. “It won’t be easy, but I trust my team. I’m looking at it positively, and we can get something out of there.”

For Osimhen, the blueprint is simple: replicate the intensity shown against Atletico, but add a clinical edge.

“Let’s play a good game as we played against Atletico, that’s the most important,” the 2023 African Player of the Year concluded.

Galatasaray now has one week to prepare for the biggest game of their season. Manchester City may already be comfortable, but a hungry Galatasaray, led by a battle-tested Victor Osimhen, will head to Manchester with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

The stage is set for a blockbuster finale. Can Osimhen inspire a miracle in Manchester?
