LAGOS — A new chapter has begun for Nigeria’s leading pay-TV operator, MultiChoice Nigeria, as Mrs. Kemi Omotosho assumes office as the company’s Chief Executive Officer, marking the first time a woman will steer the affairs of the media giant in the country.

Omotosho succeeds John Ugbe, whose transformative tenure established MultiChoice as the dominant player in the Nigerian media and entertainment landscape. Her appointment comes at a critical time when the company, like many businesses in Nigeria, is navigating a challenging economic terrain characterized by currency volatility, inflation, and shifting consumer habits.

Until her new appointment, Omotosho served as the Regional Director for Southern Africa at the MultiChoice Group, where she managed a robust portfolio across seven countries. Her role involved full profit and loss responsibility, a task that required navigating diverse regulatory environments and economic pressures similar to those in Nigeria.

Industry watchers note that her selection signals a strategic pivot towards operational discipline and customer value retention. Her career trajectory reveals a deep understanding of the commercial core of the business, having previously led customer value management across over 50 African markets for the Group.

An alumnus of the University of Ilorin with a degree in Biochemistry, Omotosho holds an Executive MBA from the Lagos Business School (LBS). Her executive education spans top-tier global institutions including INSEAD, IESE Business School, Duke Corporate Education, and Harvard Business School.

Omotosho takes the wheel at a time when the Nigerian market is facing significant headwinds. With foreign exchange losses impacting revenues and the rising cost of operations, the new CEO is expected to focus on maximizing operational efficiency while maintaining subscriber growth.

She also faces the challenge of intensifying competition from global streaming platforms. However, her reputation for a “direct and structured” leadership style—prioritizing execution over analysis—suggests she is well-equipped to drive the company’s digital transition while protecting its core pay-TV base.

Omotosho inherits a solid structure built by her predecessor, John Ugbe. Under Ugbe’s leadership, MultiChoice Nigeria expanded its footprint to 52 cities through GOtv, birthed the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), and invested heavily in local content production.

While Ugbe’s era was defined by rapid expansion and visibility, analysts believe Omotosho’s tenure will likely emphasize stability, affordability, and strategic consolidation.

As she settles into the role, stakeholders—from regulators to subscribers—will be watching closely to see how the new CEO navigates the delicate balance of sustaining profitability while delivering value to millions of Nigerian households.
