The Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) election is expected to hold on October 16, but the process is already generating conversations within the basketball community. The latest development is from Oyo State, where the state basketball association had initially sent a representative ahead of the election. However, the Oyo State Government has reportedly ordered the withdrawal of the letter backing the initial representative, after which another representative nominated by the government was sent to represent the state. The development has raised concerns over government interference in sports administration at the state level, particularly given international federation statutes on the independence of sports bodies. Questions are now being raised over the reason for the change and what it could mean for Oyo State’s position ahead of the election. There is, however, no official confirmation that the change is linked to support for any particular candidate.
