The gubernatorial candidate of the Accord Party in Oyo State, Oriyomi Hamzat, has categorically denied any involvement or sponsorship of individuals engaged in criminal activities, describing recent allegations linking him to a police-wanted suspect as a “malicious attempt” to smear his reputation. In a press statement issued on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the broadcaster-turned-politician addressed reports circulating on social media which attempted to associate him with one Surajudeen Adio Babatunde, widely known as “Surii Ilupeju.” Hamzat described the attempt to link him to the suspect as “illogical and dishonest,” asserting that professional acquaintance or social interaction does not equate to complicity in an individual’s private or criminal affairs. ”Let me state categorically that I have never, at any time, sponsored, encouraged, shielded, or supported any individual involved in criminal activities,” Hamzat stated. The gubernatorial hopeful emphasized his respect for the rule of law and the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force. He maintained that he remains open to cooperating with security agencies should they require any lawful assistance regarding any investigation. Hamzat accused his political detractors of attempting to weaponize propaganda for “cheap political points” as the 2027 election cycle approaches. ”The authors of this publication have clearly chosen the path of character assassination over facts. Their intention is obvious: to score cheap political points by creating a false narrative around my person and my aspiration to serve the good people of Oyo State,” the statement read. He urged the public to disregard the “baseless attempt at guilt by association,” reaffirming his commitment to the welfare, security, and progress of Oyo State. ”Oyo people are discerning enough to distinguish between facts and propaganda. No amount of blackmail, false accusations, or coordinated smear campaigns will distract me from my commitment to the welfare, security, and progress of our dear state,” Hamzat concluded.
