In a decisive move to reshape the nation’s political landscape, Nigeria’s opposition elements have formally committed to a unified front, vowing to field a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. The resolution, part of the landmark “Ibadan Declaration” adopted at the National Summit of Opposition Political Parties, marks a significant shift toward a consolidated strategy aimed at preventing the emergence of a one-party state. Leaders and representatives at the summit, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, emphasized that this “One Candidate, One Goal” pact is essential to “rescue our nation and her long-suffering masses”. As monitored by Gistlife, the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, served as the voice of the coalition while reading the communiqué. Turaki struck a defiant tone, asserting that the opposition would firmly resist all machinations by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). “We shall resist all machinations by the APC to foist a one-party State on Nigeria and fight for the survival of multi-party democracy in our country,” Turaki declared to the gathered delegates. Beyond the commitment to a consensus candidate, the declaration issued a scathing indictment of the current electoral leadership. The coalition passed an official vote of no confidence in the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, citing “bias and open partisanship” in favor of the ruling party. They demanded that Yakubu not conduct the 2027 elections, stating that his continued presence in office is “vexatious” and a threat to national stability. The summit also demanded urgent legislative action, calling on the National Assembly to review the Electoral Act 2026 to remove clauses that “threaten the sanctity and integrity of the elections”. Furthermore, the opposition sought an extension of the INEC deadline for party primaries to late July 2026, characterizing current guidelines as “obstacles deliberately engineered” to handicap their efforts. This unified stance signals the beginning of a sustained collaborative effort, with the coalition promising a series of future meetings and summits to ensure the rights of Nigerians are protected as the country moves toward the 2027 polls.
