As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins in earnest, Governor Seyi Makinde has reportedly set a definitive timeline to resolve the mounting succession crisis within his political camp. High-level sources within the Agodi Government House indicate that the Governor is prepared to unveil his preferred gubernatorial candidate by the end of the first week of May 2026, a move intended to consolidate his structure and quell burgeoning internal dissent.

However, this highly anticipated reveal is not happening in a vacuum. The Governor’s roadmap is strategically aligned with an impending Supreme Court judgment regarding the protracted leadership struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). With the apex court recently fast-tracking appeals related to the party’s controversial 2025 convention—scheduling crucial hearings for late April—Makinde is widely believed to be holding his final cards until the legal status of the party is absolute.

The decision on whether the Governor and his formidable “Omituntun” structure will remain under the PDP umbrella or migrate to an alternative political platform rests entirely on the outcome of this judicial verdict. This tactical delay has created a palpable tension among Oyo State political stakeholders, as the Governor’s choice of platform will inevitably dictate the alignment of major opposition forces and the fate of internal factions.

The May deadline also serves as a direct response to the “old guard” of the party, led by former Deputy Governor Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, who has been increasingly vocal about being sidelined. By fixing a date for the announcement, Makinde is effectively moving to neutralize the “successor guesswork” that has fueled recent friction and media debates, particularly on influential local platforms

As the first week of May approaches, the Pacesetter State stands at a political crossroads. The dual announcement of a preferred successor and a definitive party platform will not only shape the legacy of the Makinde administration but will also set the stage for what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested gubernatorial transitions in Oyo State’s history.
