The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluyede, has stirred a heated national debate following his recent comments regarding the military’s approach to dealing with terrorists in the country. General Oluyede, while addressing concerns from the public on why the military often captures rather than “neutralizes” insurgents who have committed heinous crimes, appealed for a spirit of forgiveness and rehabilitation. Drawing a parallel from the Holy Scriptures, the Army Chief noted that even the most wayward individuals deserve an opportunity to turn a new leaf. He said, “People are asking why are we not killing terrorists even if they have kill£d others. Well, even in the Bible, the prodigal son was given a chance, so we should give terrorists a chance to repent.” The General’s statement comes amid ongoing military operations across the North-East and North-West, where thousands of insurgents have reportedly surrendered to government forces under various de-radicalization programs. However, the comparison to the biblical “Prodigal Son” has triggered a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some security experts argue that incentivizing surrender is a faster route to peace than total kinetic warfare, many victims and civil society groups have kicked against the stance. Critics of the policy argue that the “Prodigal Son” in the Bible did not commit mass murder or displacement of innocent citizens, maintaining that justice must be served to deter future crimes. The Defence Headquarters is yet to issue a further clarification on the statement as of the time of filing this report.
