IBADAN, Nigeria – A typical Tuesday afternoon at the popular Iso-Osan (Orange Market) in Beere turned into a scene of carnage and despair as a heavy-duty trailer plowed into traders and pedestrians, leaving at least three people dead and several others fighting for their lives.

The incident, which occurred at the notorious Beere Roundabout in the heart of the Oyo State capital, was reportedly caused by a catastrophic brake failure as the vehicle descended the slope from the Oja’Oba axis.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of pure chaos as the massive truck, completely out of control, barreled toward the crowded market stalls. Despite the driver’s reported attempts to alert road users, the sheer momentum of the trailer made the impact inevitable.

“It was like a movie, but with real blood,” said a survivor who narrowly escaped the path of the vehicle. “The trailer just kept coming. It crushed motorcycles, smashed into cars, and finally ended up inside the market where people were selling oranges. Three people died on the spot.”

Residents of the Beere area have long expressed concerns over the steep slope leading to the roundabout, which has seen similar accidents in the past. This latest tragedy has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance for heavy trucks and a possible restriction of trailer movements during peak market hours.
