The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Nigeria.

This follows the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on Wednesday, March 18, which marked the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH.

Gistlife reports that the announcement was contained in a statement released by the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee.

According to the statement, no credible reports of the moon being sighted were received from any part of the country on Wednesday evening.

“Therefore, Thursday, March 19, 2026, shall be the 30th day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the committee confirmed.

Based on this development, the Sultan, who serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), approved Friday as the 1st of Shawwal and the official day of Eid.

“His Eminence has accepted the report and accordingly declared Friday, 20th March 2026, as the day of Eid-el-Fitr,” the statement read.

While congratulating the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of the fast, the Sultan urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for national unity, peace, and progress.

Gistlife recalls that Saudi Arabia had earlier slated Friday for its Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, aligning the festivities for millions of Muslims globally.
