Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially inaugurated the pioneer board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) at the Lagos House, Ikeja. The move, which took place on Monday, follows the enactment of the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024. The new commission is tasked with overseeing and regulating the electricity market within the state, effectively giving Lagos a more independent role in power management and delivery. Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that LASERC would be responsible for licensing electricity providers, setting fair tariffs, and protecting consumers. He emphasized that the board would also foster a competitive energy market while supporting innovations in renewable energy and efficient power systems. “This is an important step in strengthening how electricity is regulated in our state. With this board, we are focused on building a power sector that works better for residents, businesses, and the future of Lagos,” the Governor said. The Governor further noted that the establishment of the commission is a crucial part of the state’s strategy to ensure a more reliable and sustainable power sector, aimed at supporting the state’s growing economy and improving the quality of life for its residents. The inauguration is expected to pave the way for increased investment in the Lagos energy sector as the state seeks to reduce its reliance on the national grid and provide 24-hour power to its citizens.
