The political atmosphere in Rivers State has reached a boiling point following a violent ambush on the convoy of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially demanded the immediate arrest and interrogation of the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, linking him to the Friday, March 6, 2026, attack that saw security operatives exchange gunfire with masked hoodlums. According to eyewitness reports and ADC officials, the incident occurred along the Omuanwa axis while Amaechi was traveling to his hometown, Ubima, for a high-stakes party registration exercise. The road was reportedly blocked by a group of armed men. While the LG Chairman has since claimed these individuals were members of the Onelga Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC)—a local vigilante group—the ADC has hit back, labeling them “sponsored hoodlums. During a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Chairman of the ADC, Leader Bari, insisted that the blockade was a deliberate act of political sabotage. “We traveled through other communities and saw genuine OSPAC members who did not block the road. But at Omuanwa, we met hoodlums,” Bari stated. “The attackers fired first at the security operatives escorting the former governor, prompting a tactical response. We are calling on security agencies to arrest Charles Wobodo; he has questions to answer.” Adding weight to the allegations, Temple Chinedu, the ADC Chairman for Ikwerre LGA, revealed that party members had been living under a cloud of fear long before the convoy was hit. This attack is the latest in a series of violent disruptions as Rivers State prepares for the 2027 electoral cycle. With the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) currently embroiled in its own leadership crisis and the ADC pushing for a foothold in the state, the “Ikwerre Axis” has once again become a flashpoint for political warfare. The Nigeria Police Force has yet to confirm if any arrests have been made following the ADC’s formal demand. Meanwhile, supporters of Amaechi and the ADC are reportedly on “high alert” across the state.
