The “City of Brown Roofs” and its surrounding states are facing a brutal blackout, and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) says its hands are tied. In a “save our soul” statement released on Saturday, March 7, 2026, the energy provider revealed that the worsening outages are due to a massive failure at the national level. From Osogbo to Ibadan, the frustration has already boiled over into the streets, with angry youths storming IBEDC offices to demand why their “Band A” promises have turned into “Band Zero” reality. IBEDC isn’t just dealing with faulty wires; they are battling a nationwide energy drought. The company highlighted three major reasons for the current “blackout season.” The tension turned physical on Wednesday when youths in Osogbo marched to the IBEDC regional office. The protesters issued a seven-day ultimatum, slamming the company for “wickedness” and demanding a return to stable supply. โWe fully understand the frustration… we sincerely apologize for the disruption to homes, businesses, and economic activities,โ IBEDC pleaded in their Saturday statement. Despite the “pandemonium” and threats of further demonstrations, IBEDC is begging community leaders and residents to choose the table over the trenches. They insist they are working with the “big players” in the electricity value chain to stabilize the grid, but warn that until the gas supply improves, load shedding (rotational blackouts) will continue. For now, small businessesโthe barbers, the welders, and the frozen food vendorsโare left counting their losses as the “Grid Monster” continues to haunt the nation.
