NEW YORK — The vibrant dreams of a 30-year-old Nigerian fashion designer have been cut short following a senseless act of violence in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. Sheriff Shittu, a creative entrepreneur who relocated to the United States to expand his fashion brand, was fatally shot on February 14 outside Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn. The incident occurred around 4:25 a.m. while Shittu was celebrating a friend’s birthday alongside his younger brother, Fawaz. According to preliminary reports, the tragedy stemmed from a confrontation with an intoxicated patron. Witnesses stated the suspect had been behaving in a disorderly manner inside the club, allegedly making inappropriate advances toward several female guests, including Shittu’s girlfriend. This led to a heated exchange between the designer and the unruly individual. The situation turned lethal when security personnel attempted to escort the suspect out of the premises. As he was being led away, the individual reportedly produced a firearm and opened fire. “It was devastating,” his brother, Fawaz Shittu, recalled in an emotional statement. He described the frantic, heartbreaking moments spent trying to get Sheriff to respond after the bullets struck him. Shittu was rushed to One Brooklyn Health (Brookdale University Hospital Medical Centre), but despite medical efforts, he was tragically pronounced dead. The family of the deceased is now calling for accountability. Salem Shittu, a relative, raised pointed questions regarding the safety protocols at the venue. “How was a firearm able to pass through screening at the entrance?” Salem asked, noting that stricter security measures could have saved his relative’s life. New York law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting and remains at large. An active investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend the shooter. Sheriff Shittu is remembered by his loved ones as a determined, visionary young man who moved to the U.S. with the hope of building a global legacy in the fashion industry.
