The Nigerian media is in mourning following the passing of Kani Ben, a veteran cameraman with Channels Television. Ben succumbed to severe spinal cord injuries in the early hours of Sunday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH), Bauchi.

The veteran journalist passed away at approximately 4:00 a.m. in the hospital’s Modular Theatre Complex, where he had been battling for his life since a horrific road accident on February 6, 2026.

The accident occurred along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area. Ben was part of a 13-member press crew covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The delegation, led by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, had just completed the handover of a Government Secondary School in Yelwan Duguri when the tragedy struck.

Kani Ben, who was seated in the front passenger seat, bore the brunt of the impact, sustaining critical injuries to his spine. Despite undergoing emergency surgery a day after the crash, his condition remained precarious.

While other journalists involved in the crash sustained varying injuries—including head trauma and compound fractures—Ben’s injuries ultimately proved fatal

The death of Kani Ben highlights the high risks faced by media professionals in the line of duty, particularly those traveling across the country to bring news to the public. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Colleagues and members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) have begun pouring out tributes, describing Ben as a dedicated professional who was committed to his craft until the very end.
