IBADAN — Former Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Owoseni (retd), has described Oyo State as a shining model of religious tolerance and unity in Nigeria, declaring that Muslims and Christians in the state coexist as an indivisible family. Owoseni made the declaration on Saturday following his turbaning as the Atunluse-Ilu Adini of Oyo State by the Grand Imam of Oyo State, His Eminence Sheikh AbdulGaniy Agbotomokekere. The colourful turbaning ceremony took place at the Central Mosque, Oja’Oba, followed by a grand reception at the Agodi Gardens, Ibadan, which attracted the crème de la crème of Oyo State’s political and social circles. Speaking at the reception, the new Atunluse-Ilu Adini expressed profound gratitude to the state functionaries who honoured him. He singled out the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Segun Ogunwuyi, citing his presence as a practical demonstration of the state’s deep-rooted culture of unity. “I want to give appreciation and recognition to him. Critically, right from the mosque, despite the fact that the gentleman is not a Muslim, he became an Alfa today, as he was in the mosque with us and played a very significant role,” Owoseni noted. “Everyone needs to know that in Oyo State, it is not about Christian or Muslim, but we are a whole family. That is the true identity of Oyo State.” Earlier at the Oja’Oba mosque, the Grand Imam, Sheikh Agbotomokekere, described the retired Police boss as a disciplined and God-fearing personality whose 35-year career in the Nigerian Police Force was defined by integrity. Charging the new title holder, the cleric said: “This turban is a call to higher responsibility. As Atunluse-Ilu Adini, you must continue to stand for justice, peace, and the protection of lives, irrespective of tribe or religion.” The event served as a reunion for political heavyweights and security chiefs. Dignitaries in attendance included the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr. Bayo Lawal; the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Babatunde Musibau; and Member of the Oyo State Advisory Council, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu. Also present were the Commissioner for Energy, Professor Shangodoyin; Commissioner for Lands, Akin Funmilayo; and former Commissioner for Budget, Barrister Seun Ashamu. The Inspector-General of Police was represented by the AIG Zone 11, who led a high-powered police delegation from Osogbo. Political stalwarts at the event included the PDP State Vice-Chairman, Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke; PDP Publicity Secretary, Hon. Michael Ogunsina; Chairman of Oluyole LG, Hon. Akeem Olatunji; and Egbeda LG Chairman, Hon. Sanda. Business mogul Babafemi Babalola (Jogor), the Okanlomo of Ibadanland, Chief Dotun Sanusi, and table tennis legend Waidi Ekun were also on the ground to celebrate the new religious chief.
