In order to restore sanity and smooth administration, the Chairman of Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun state, Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo has suspended all markets leadership in the local government.
The LG in a swift action, replaced the leaderships with a central market management and monitoring committee.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by the LG and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the State capital early hours of Wednesday.
Alhaja Faidat Akintunde Sarumi will head the 15-man committee.
Others are, Alhaja Zainab Faleye, Alhaji Tokunbo Razaq, Kazeem Shogbiyanju, Funmi Olaonipekun, Nureini Oke, Semiu Oderinde, Bolanle Jelilat, Adebayo Tajudeen, Saheed Ajamagbiso, Kayode Ajibola, Yomi Shomuyiwa, Idowu Abegunrin and Mutiat Omowunmi Agbaje as the Secretary.
The committee will be inaugurated officially on Friday, January 2nd, 2026 by 11am at the conference room of the LG.
Oyegbola-Sodipo explained that the committee was set up in its bid to restore sanity, order, structure, progress and enhance the commercial activities in all markets within Abeokuta North LG.
The statement indicated, “This directive becomes effective today, Wednesday, December 31st 2025 and shall be in effect for the next six months. By this directive, all market related activities are hereby to situate within the purview of the Central Market Management And Monitoring Committee reporting to the Chairman and the F&GPC of the local government”.
“The general public is therefore put on notice that anyone that deals with the already suspended Iyalojas and Babalojas in all of the markets does so at their own peril”, the statement added.
The terms of reference for the C3MC, according to the statement, “shall be to:
- Establish market count, 2. Determine needed facilities
- Recommend appropriate rates and cycle for collection
- Ensure free flow of traffic and traffic management within and around the markets
- Propose market structure that would be sustainable
- Ensure urgent and immediate evacuation of refuse and blockages in drain ducts and gutters
- Comprehensive review of the security architecture of markets in conjunction with security operatives
- Ensure the establishment of appropriate environmentally acceptable practices within the markets
- Ensure proper uploading of all market segments and groups on LG portal to ensure proper headcount for management of robust database”.
