The Court of Appeal in Abuja has upheld a judgment from the Federal High Court, issued on October 4, 2024, which prohibits the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (commonly known as VIO) from stopping, impounding, or confiscating vehicles on the road, as well as from imposing fines on motorists.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, a three-member panel of the appellate court addressed three issues identified for consideration and found them all to be against the appellant, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services.
Justice Oyejoju Oyebiola Oyewumi, who presented the lead judgment, stated that the appeal lacked merit. She awarded costs of N1 million against the appellant, in favor of the respondent, Abubakar Marshal, who is a rights activist and public interest attorney.
