Former NBA player Al-Farouq Aminu’s journey to professional basketball began with a simple act of determination, according to his father, Abou Aminu.

Speaking during the AGWF Basketball Camp in Ibadan, Abou recalled that Al-Farouq was just four years old when he first showed an unwavering desire to play the game.

According to him, the family had taken Al-Farouq’s older brother, who was seven at the time, to register at a basketball academy. However, the academy only admitted children aged five and above, leaving the young Al-Farouq ineligible.

“We told him, ‘No, you can’t play. Go and sit down,'” Abou recounted.

Despite the instruction, the youngster repeatedly returned to the court whenever he was moved away, determined to join the other children.

Abou said he explained to his son that he was too young to participate, but Al-Farouq’s response revealed a confidence that would later define his career.

“I told him, ‘You’re only four years old.’ He looked at me and said, ‘But I’m the same height as them.'”

That moment, Abou said, marked the beginning of an extraordinary basketball journey.

“I remember when Al-Farouq started playing basketball, I never imagined he would go all the way to the NBA. That was how it all started,” he added.

Al-Farouq Aminu went on to enjoy a successful NBA career after being selected eighth overall in the 2010 NBA Draft, representing teams including the Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Hornets, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic and Chicago Bulls. He has also been a key figure for Nigeria’s D’Tigers at major international competitions.

Abou Aminu shared the story to inspire young campers, encouraging them to embrace the game with passion, discipline and perseverance, regardless of where their journey begins.
