The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency, Samson Opeyemi Fatola, has donated solar-powered street lights to Akuro Community in the Olorunsogo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The project, inaugurated on Tuesday, was aimed at improving security and addressing the poor lighting infrastructure in the community.

Residents who attended the inauguration commended the PDP candidate, describing the intervention as a timely response to the security challenges facing the area.

The Chairman of Akuro Community, Adekunle Abisogin Bada, said the donation marked a departure from what he described as years of unfulfilled promises by politicians.

He said, “Many politicians have visited this community with promises that were never fulfilled. We have been neglected for years, but Hon. Fatola fulfilled his promise within a very short time.”

The Vice Chairman of the community, Alfa Mutiu Olasinde, said Fatola had visited the community to inspect its challenges and returned within three days to install the solar-powered street lights.

According to him, the project will improve security and reduce criminal activities in the area.

“We requested street lights because of insecurity, and he delivered almost immediately. It is a rare gesture,” he said.

Another resident, Elizabeth Oladosu, said Fatola had previously supported members of the community through free eye care services and educational assistance.

“If he can do this without holding public office, I believe he will do more if elected,” she said.

Speaking at the inauguration, Fatola said the project was in fulfilment of a commitment he made after visiting the community and assessing its needs.

He said the poor state of infrastructure and security concerns informed his decision to provide the solar-powered street lights.

According to him, a recent killing in the area, allegedly linked to poor visibility at night, highlighted the need for urgent intervention.

Fatola disclosed that he planned to install two Closed-Circuit Television cameras in the community to strengthen surveillance and support efforts to curb crime.

He also promised to facilitate the reconstruction of a dilapidated bridge in the area through constituency projects if elected into the House of Representatives.

The PDP candidate said communities on the outskirts of Ibadan had suffered years of neglect despite contributing to the development of the state.

He added that the solar street light project was one of several interventions planned across the 23 wards that make up the federal constituency.

Fatola said the projects were being funded from his personal resources, noting that he had never occupied any elective office or managed public funds.

He urged residents to support his bid for the House of Representatives, pledging to priorities infrastructure development and community welfare if elected.
