Frontline troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers who were abducted by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during a deadly raid on a school in Borno State.

The breakthrough followed a fierce gun battle in the Daggu area, during which a gallant soldier and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) paid the supreme price.

The incident unfolded on Monday morning when motorcycle-riding insurgents stormed a Technical Secondary School in the Lassa community of Askira/Uba Local Government Area while students were sitting for their examinations. The terrorists opened fire, killing a teacher on the spot, before abducting an unspecified number of students and faculty members.

In a swift counter-offensive, the military deployed ground forces and scrambled strike and surveillance aircraft to track down the fleeing terrorists. Troops intercepted the cell, inflicting heavy casualties and forcing the insurgents to abandon 10 of the captives, who have been recovered unharmed.

The Acting Military Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Mohammed Goni, confirmed that seven motorcycles were captured from the terrorists, adding that massive search-and-rescue operations are still underway to track the remaining abductees and secure the border communities.
