Commuters and motorists plying the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were subjected to hours of harrowing gridlock today following a massive multi-vehicle pileup that paralyzed traffic on both sides of the highway, stretching from the Guru Marah Ji area to the Quarry axis.

Nifemi Peters, a Senior Correspondent for Gistlife, who visited the scene of the accident, confirmed that the pileup involved several vehicles and that the exact number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.

The tragedy, which occurred earlier today, was triggered when a speeding gas tanker lost control, initiating a catastrophic chain reaction that left several other vehicles mangled in its path. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the sheer scale of the collision caused an immediate, total lockdown of the expressway in both directions.

Ajibola Oluyayide, who witnessed the immediate aftermath of the crash, explained that the disaster unfolded when the tanker driver failed to maintain control, forcing surrounding motorists to make desperate, evasive maneuvers to avoid a direct impact. These frantic reactions ultimately resulted in the pileup and extensive damage to multiple vehicles.

The incident has reignited urgent calls for the government to step up oversight regarding road safety and adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward reckless driving. Concerns continue to mount among road users and local residents regarding the safety of heavy-duty vehicles frequently transiting this economic artery.

Observers at the scene emphasized that the government must urgently review and enforce stricter traffic management protocols. There are widespread demands for the implementation of more rigorous vehicle inspections for heavy-duty tankers to ensure they are roadworthy and fully equipped for emergency situations before being permitted on major expressways. Stakeholders are also calling for the installation of clearer traffic signaling and speed control mechanisms in high-risk zones, alongside a sustained, aggressive focus on driver education to ensure motorists strictly adhere to safe following distances.

As authorities labor to clear the wreckage, there is growing clamor for swift, decisive action to ensure that such avoidable tragedies do not repeat themselves on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
