President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who is reportedly preparing for a political move ahead of the 2027 elections. The President also nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending confirmation by the Senate. The appointments were disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who said the changes are aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic strategy and aligning foreign policy with the administration’s economic agenda. “These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement read. Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to lead Nigeria’s external relations at a time when the government is placing increased emphasis on economic diplomacy, regional stability, and broader international cooperation. The presidency highlighted her extensive experience in global affairs, noting that she brings decades of diplomatic service and a strong grasp of Nigeria’s international engagements. Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations. He has held postings in key cities including Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi. According to the statement, his nomination is part of efforts to ensure continuity and strengthen Nigeria’s foreign service. President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to prioritise national interest, deepen economic diplomacy, and improve the welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
