The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is reportedly set to resign his cabinet position within the week to pursue his 2027 governorship ambition in Oyo State. The decision follows a high-profile meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House on Tuesday, where the Minister reportedly sought and received the President’s “blessings” for his political aspirations. Sources close to the Presidency confirmed that Adelabu also utilized the session to brief the President on his achievements in the power sector over the last two and a half years. The anticipated resignation comes despite the expiration of the March 31 deadline previously set for federal political appointees seeking elective offices. Following his visit to the Villa, Adelabu reportedly held further consultations with key All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts, including former Osun State Governor Chief Bisi Akande and former NNPCL Chairman Chief Pius Akinyelure. Adelabu, who previously contested for the Agodi Government House in 2019 under the APC and in 2023 under the Accord Party, has recently re-aligned with the APC to contest the upcoming primaries. The party has scheduled its governorship primaries for May 23, 2026, with the sale of forms—pegged at ₦50 million—slated to begin this Saturday, April 25. Should he officially declare, the Minister will join a competitive field of APC aspirants, including Senator Sarafadeen Alli, representing Oyo South, and Oyedele Alao. His exit from the federal cabinet is expected to trigger a significant reshuffle in the power ministry as the 2027 political cycle gathers momentum.
